The Portrayal of Gender Stereotypes through Female Characters in the Hollow Knight (2017) Video Game

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the female characters and their stereotypes in the
video game Hollow Knight. The researchers extracts data from the game relevant to the topic
in the form of dialogue, visuals, actions, events, and other elements. The theories of gender
stereotypes, especially those in relation to the female gender in video games, will be
analyzed. The main theory used for the analysis is Anita Sarkeesian’s feminist criticism in
video games. It is found that there are a considerable amount of female characters represented
in a way that challenges their gender stereotypes within the game. The female characters in
the game are portrayed as active warriors, independent persons, and proficient leaders, going
against their stereotypes in video games. However, even with representations that challenge
gender stereotypes, the influence of these gender stereotypes still appears within its female
characters. At times, they are represented as damsels in distress, sexualized objects, and even
weak and dependent characters. In conclusion, the impacts of gender stereotypes in the video
game industry can still be observed and is still influencing how women are portrayed in video
games, even in games that actively try to combat these stereotypes.
